Nuzzer: A Device-free Passive Localization System for Wireless Environments







WLAN Device-free Passive (DfP) localization is an emerging field in location determination enabling the localization of entities that neither carry any devices nor participate actively in the localization process using the already installed wireless infrastructure. The DfP concept utilizes the fact that RF characteristics are functions of the surrounding environment. Changes in the received physical signals can be related to changes in the environment. Among these changes, we are interested in detecting and tracking the motion of entities, humans in particular. DfP systems are attractive for many practical applications including: intrusion detection and tracking, sensor-less sensing, low cost surveillance, home automation and interactive visual display systems for museums and retail stores.

In this project, we aim at extending the DfP system to be capable of achieving high accuracy for typical scenarios in real environments. In particular, the project targets the development of accurate detection and tracking algorithms that are suitable for operation in large-scale real environments. In addition, detection and tracking of multiple entities in the same time are being studied. Techniques for automatic construction of radio maps are being devised to save calibration effort. Moreover, advanced features like identifying the profile of the detected entities are investigated.
